Just thought to remind you of our new home Iron Sleet (www.ironsleet.com). Don't miss all the great things happening in there! For instance, yesterday we got a nice set of John Blanche's newest art, The Voodoo Forest, that we had a great honour to publish in our new blog. Check it Out!

Many of you good and loyal followers have noticed how the activity of Spiky Rat Pack has been shamelessly quiet for quite some time now. There really is no excuse for this negligence and that's why we sincerely want to apologize this from you. You guys are the reason why we've kept this thing up and running as long as four years! And crazy four years it has been!

The header of this post is a bit scary. We have discussed about Spiky Rat Pack's future numerous times, namely talking about what we should do with the blog in the future. We still love to make distinctive miniatures and love to share our work with you guys, so we still want to keep blogging. But we think the Spiky Rat Pack as it is has came to its end and that's why the header actually is true.

But like all the pests, rats don't die and give up so easily!

Here's the twist! We've had long and interesting discussions with Migsula of Legion of Plastic – whose inspiring work we both admire and appreciate a lot – about putting our forces together to establish new joint blog for our creative projects. It kind of made sense to us all; we all come from Finland, share the same vision regarding the 40k universe and like to explore and widen our artistic nature with great passion. The new blog is now up and running and is know as...

>> IRON SLEET <<

The new blog will be mostly about our beloved 40k universe. We also want to keep sharing our insights regarding the hobby and keep inspiring you guys with numerous different ways, such as nice illustrations, rousing poetry, great stories and fantastic ambient music. There will also be interesting guest contributors every now and then...

We are very excited about this and look forward to keep blogging together with such a great talent as Migs! So if you still wish to see and hear what I and Mikko are about to do in the fields of miniature hobby and the scene around it, follow the link and start following the Iron Sleet. I promise you won't be disappointed!

The rich red colour I used in the first Chaos Astartes was quite peculiar to copy for the second one. I used several different techniques to achieve it but didn't keep any record of the methods used. Other than that, it was fun piece to paint and the end result sits pretty well alongside the previous Marine.

The skull on the tilting shield is a transfer, as are the numbers on the Marine's shoulder ornament. It has been a while since I used one of those, but this time I wanted to try and see how would they sit in my current style. The skull needed some dimming down as it was way too bright. I'm not so sure if I like the shield the way it looks like, but for now it may stay the way it is. I think I'll stick with the freehand painting though.

It is funny how you go blind to certain details when you keep working on with a single project for longer period of time. In this case I notice couple of mistakes and oddities just after I had primed the miniature, things that I need to fix before continuing with the painting process. For instance, the waist trim looks very odd because of the lonely spike sticking out of it. I need to rethink it and make some sort of shield in place of the spike, maybe sculpt a small skull motif in there. Also, some of the spikes on this guys shoulder armours look like they've just been glued in the place – yeah, that's true but I wanted the spikes to look like if they were growing out of the armour.Kari Hernesniemihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09927700049356472857noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433941857867447258.post-81385411940854215902014-10-26T11:44:00.002+02:002014-10-26T11:46:47.966+02:00Red Corsair #2 – WIP IFour months. Four bloody months since the last time I wrote a posted in here. That is a damn long time and I must apologize for it...

To wrap things up I need to start from this summer. I had just started my well deserved long summer leave – five weeks to be exact – and because it felt that I had lots of time in my hands, we decided to make some small renovations in our apartment. That "small" project prolonged in to three week task and took a lot of juice off me. It was a creative task all right, but physically very stressful, so I decided to take some time off from the hobby and other not so urgent stuff and just take it easy.

Few months later I felt that it was a time to get back in action. But it took me some time to reignite the engine.

When painting the Plague Marines before the off-time I noticed how hard it was to give them my fullest attention. It was fun project to do, tried some new techniques while doing it too. But something was off... I pushed that project forward and finished the whole squad, but I felt kind of left without the much needed umph afterwards! And I knew why – They weren't in true-/art-scale. I believe it's the curse of the true-scaleism; Once you've built and painted one of those, there's really no turning back, is there?

There was a spark, ignition and fire. I decided to continue one of my "side tracks", The Red Corsairs. So I dug in to my bits box and started putting pieces together, finally making a bits sketch based loosely on one of my drawings. Below is the first part of the story of the project presented in the set of WIP shot...

Wanted to built APC for my Squat infantry units. I wanted it to look tough & brutal. No unnecessary decorations, just a bulldog delivering the troops into the thick off a fight. At first I struggled hard to find suitable base for the APC. Didn't just wanted to choose Rhino with some Squat freehands on it's sides. Instead I wanted to create vehicle that was built using GW plastic kits but would still look completely original (pretty much what I did with my dreadnought model earlier)! Phew… Harder than I thought it would be. I was stuck for a long time not been able to find perfect starting point... until GW released their latest goodie… – Space Wolves Stormfang Gunship!

Whoah! It was perfect! no tracks but still sharing the Space Marine design language. I was thrilled, I rushed to get my copy right away, I also got the Rhino kit to go with it, since I wanted my Squat APC to still look little bit like Rhino since, after all my Squat force is still basically Space Marine army.

I started to play the game of mixing with the two kits, I wanted it to have the same access-points and weapon combinations as Rhino had, so I had some sort of plan to follow. At firs it was going to look more like one of those WWII Assault boats at Normandy but quite soon, almost by accident I flipped the whole chassis upside-down and Bam! There it was, totally fresh look that looked nothing like GW had done even tho it was made out of their own kits. I was very happy.

So here it is, the first one of the two Rhinos I still need to build. It actually ended up looking so good that I pretty sure I also need to ad Predator variant to my force in some point. Paint job was very simple - The same blueish-grey basic colour that I have used throughout my whole army. Tactical markings - White stripe for infantry & orange to mark the company (12th company) lots of weathering and simple freehand on the side & there it was. Really hope you like it!

Here's the first part of Lords of Decay slice for the Chaos Space Marine project that I'm currently working on. I've finished the first squad of Plague Marines and their dedicated transport. Quick and nasty painting style, which is the way I'm starting to come to terms with.

The summoned Plaguebearers were originally a part of my Fantasy Battle Chaos Army (or start of such), but since I'm done with building that particular force, I decided to change their bases to the round ones and include them in this project.

Next I'm planning to add a very small group of Chosen Chaos Space Marines...Kari Hernesniemihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09927700049356472857noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433941857867447258.post-84672152453114493012014-06-08T10:27:00.000+03:002014-06-09T18:49:03.467+03:00The Brotherhood Of Steel - Story So Far...

My first intention was to build a solid 1000 to 1500 points playable army of Emperor's Children, but after finishing the fifth book of the Horus Heresy series, I wanted to mix things a little and decided to expand the army to Death Guard.

I had bought the set of Plague Marines way back, but never got the spark to start with them... until recently. Our little circle of like-minded talented hobbyists put together a small playful painting challenge, where each would have to paint a miniature of their choice within three hours. So I chose to paint one of the Plague Marines, as I had a very clear vision of the colour scheme I would use for it; dirty and weathered white armour, rusty trims and patinated copper, sickly gray skin and bright orange as contrast.

The outcome of the challenge was very promising, considering the time used for one single figure. It was nice change to my routines too, as I've used to spend hours and hours with my previous miniatures. Full of hobby spirit I decided that I would put my Chaos Space Marine project back on track and paint the rest of the seven Plague Marines with the same technique and colour scheme.

Now here's the first four members of the Death Guard, marching on the ruins of some long forgotten battleground, searching for something to stab with their infectious blades...
So here comes the revered force commander Thorwarg Ironmane. He was the high commander of the League of Emberg. Emberg was one of the smallest of the Squat Leagues closest to the Eye of Terror and included only four strongholds. When the Splinter fleet destroyed the Squat home worlds Thorwarg and his brothers had gone to war and were drifting through the warp when the tragedy happened. Warned by his spiritual ancestors, Thorwag quickly steered his ships back home to aid his brothers but Warp currents delayed Thorwarg's fleet and when they finally got there it was too late. Now Thorwarg and his fighting brotherhood are roaming around the galaxy to seek their vengeage!

Another pack of murderous Arco Evisorators got finished few evenings ago. These "Stooges" are even more violent and agile than ones done before, but I'm sure they'll fit in just fine.

The half-bald nutter is equipped with some sort of stinger that he uses to pick up the chopped-off heads from the ground (too bad he doesn't have any hands to tie the trophies on his belt). His friend with the flesh mask has had some bad luck with the evisorator, so his left arm has been replaced with a syringe filled with battle steroids or some other drug to help their kinds go crazy. He's a helpful little critter, stinging his mates with the needle whenever they turn their backs on him, making them go berzerk with adrenaline overdoze... And then there's the gas-mask fella. He's sipping some delicious brain juice out of his beheaded victim's head. Yum yum! He's a happy little guy, singing in the rain – of blood.

My Squat force has now reached the point where I have managed to get the troop choices ready and painted. As you all surely know, this is also the most boring part when new army is started. Row after row of foot soldiers who all look very much alike. I have proceeded with great speed and it has been a great fun all the way!

But before I start converting any more miniatures, I must first just sit back and start to work on the background story for these guys.

Where do they come from? How did they managed to avoid from the fate that met their brothers?? To who they hold they grudge now??? Lots of questions that need answering…

The great thing about army projects is the fact that they last for long periods of time. After every new character / squad there should be enough time to really think that what needs to be added next. I don't want to rush things and I need to check all the newly released plastic kits for good parts etc...
Here's my latest creation, Lady Inquisitor of Ordo Xenos. I introduced this project to you in one of my previous posts in a form of a sketch, but after that I kept the process pretty much in the dark.

Here she now stands, proud and noble, armed to teeth with Xenos
weapons of different origin, in her well-travelled and battle worn dress
and tight corset-like body glove armour. She carries a small power generator on her back which is connected to a strange weapon of two tentacle-like needles. Capsules of different size and shape, filled liquids and poisons of different sort, stick out of her back like dark flowers. Her head is shaven (something
nobles of her kind might do to show off their caste in where she comes from). She's very
self-assured and knows what she wants. You can only guess what her
entourage would look like...

It took me good three months to finish her. I kept pushing the project forward with small but sure steps, putting an hour in to it every now and then. The process wasn't all sing and sunshine as I did have some set-backs on the road. Just when I had one piece ready and sculpted, the other parts looked odd or off-place. I had to sculpt the dress twice as I wasn't satisfied by the way it looked like. It was way too light build and was sculpted to look too rough and unnatural.

She also had her head swapped once. The first one was Slaaneshi Daemonette's but I didn't like it that much so decided to get one from the Dark Elf Sorceress. The new head was much better, more femine. But there was a new problem to be solved; her mouth. The original head had it's mouth wide open, like if she was roaring out some loud commands or something. It really didn't fit in as her body language spoke very much different language – very static and noble. So to solve this new problem I had to cut off her jaw and re-sculpt the whole lower part of her head, to make her look more like in the sketch. No easy task for me as I'm used to sculpt ugly men with rough shapes. But I think I managed to pull it off.

Her colours – as so often in my case – are very much in the style of Blanchitsu; reds, oranges and dirty white. She actually blends in the Rogues Malus and could very well be one of them.
I gave an extra effort to her face as I wanted it to be perfect.
Painted the damn eyes three times to make them look the way I wanted to – piercing and precise! When the head piece was done, the rest of the painting went like clockwork.

Hope you like the outcome as much I liked making the piece! Now it is time to look for a suitable package for her to make her journey to Spain safe... Adiós!
Once again it was the John Blanche artwork that drew my attention…

Just brilliant! I wanted to field a Squat army!! but, wait!!!,,, even though the rulebook (& Codex Imperialis) displayed them as one of the major races of the 40k universe, in the reality they were already wiped out from the system (as I later bitterly found out). Bummer!!!

During the years I have played with the idea of resurrecting this race back to battlefields but since so far there haven't really been good miniatures to convert them from! Until very recently… (although Johan has done very inspiring conversion before me here)

I was browsing through GW's site and there they were! Dwarf Iron Breakers!!! seriously perfect candidates for my long time dream of fielding a army of these stunty diehards!

Iron Breaker bodies and heads combined with hands, guns and accessories from Space Marine Scouts All very simple and all very effective! and easy too!!!

So one test-mini turned into a squad and now Im aiming for a small battle force to play with my mates at work (yes, we have active WH-gaming group there!). Im thinking of using Space Marine or maybe even Space Wolves rules for them, so at least another tactical squad and a command squad… and a Ancestor (dreadnought) then few Trikes (attack bikes) and Hearthguard (terminators) and…. you get the point.

OK I got to admit that this all started as a joke, a bit of fun to got my attention back to painting miniatures again, but as soon as I started I realized that this was lot more than a joke. So the story of the Lost League started to evolve…
Very simple paint job - airbrush for the blueish-grey base coat (Tamiya paints) and GW paints for the rest. I was tempted to paint the bolter casings red just for the old times sake, but then I thought that the Squats are retro enough alone so I went for the black. I painted the sleeves orange to give some colour and it actually works pretty well with the highly restricted palette.

Hope you guys like them too.
UPDATE [3.30.2014]

The sergeant will get his blade replaced by 2.edition plastic power axe soon ;) Next some green stuffing and then painting! I think I will go for grey/blueish base colours, while the shoulder plates will receive tactical markings with bright colors (orange/green etc.)

Should I use Rhinos as the squad APC for these guys? Or would ("heavily squatted") Chimera look more cooler??Mikko Luomahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15414478537204536796noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433941857867447258.post-54047733695180328812014-03-13T19:23:00.000+02:002014-04-17T08:19:35.931+03:00Heavy Support!Another simple kit bash with the heavy bolter, the Scout parts fit nicely again. I used a Bloodletter's body as a basis for this miniature. To give some contrast and weirdness, I made his other side slightly slimmer by making the arm wielding the chain blade a bit thinner. If you look closely, you can spot that this guy actually has three arms instead of two.

The back of the Arco is filled with junk; old trophy skulls hanging in ropes from the back hair, combat stimm tubes sticking out of his flesh and one a big canister of mysterious "=I= stuff" – who knows what kind of juice that thing holds within.

The base was once again painted by John Blanche. I really love the way the bright and vibrant red base brings these Arco Evisorators alive.Kari Hernesniemihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09927700049356472857noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7433941857867447258.post-397783285349342512014-02-13T23:18:00.002+02:002014-02-13T23:18:35.458+02:00Pale Skin Tutorial

Every now and then I get asked for hints how to paint the pale skin like I do. I've tried my best in replying these requests by writing simple tutorials, but when thinking of it more, explaining how something is done is far less interesting and educating than actually showing it.

Now I won't be showing you 2 hour video about me painting miniature. That would be just plain dull thing to do. What I will do is present a short tutorial with step-by-step pictures how to paint the pale skin, similar to those Arco Evisorators that I've painted.

So here we go...

First of all, I prime my miniature almost always in grey. I find it being gentle to my eyes and makes it easier for me to perceive details.

For base colour I used mix of five colours: Codex Grey, Skull White, Tallarn Flesh, Khemri Brown.

Shade everything with a wash made from a mixture of Asurmen Blue and Gryphonne Sepia. Asurmen Blue breaks the over-warm tone of the Gryphonne Sepia. This trick was introduced to me by Steve from Spyglass Asylum.
Now comes the interesting part. Add some depth to recesses by painting some brown-red ink in them. I'll get back to this later in this post.
Paint couple of thin layers with the basic colour made out of those 5 paints used in the first few steps, highlighting a bit with adding a drop of white in the mixture.

Add some blue grey in the mix and start shading the areas between the original skin colour and the deep red ink areas, blending these two radical colours together with the cold blue tone. Blue works also as a complimentary colour in shaded areas, making the skin more alive, so make a note in what sort of lighting the character could be standing in.

Now you can start seeing how the red and blue tones make the pale skin look like a translucent layer of thin skin; joint areas are red and deep, rich with blood, whereas large surfacing areas are pale, tight and low in blood. Makes sence in a way, doesn't it?

Keep working on with the skin by highlighting it, adding more white to the base colour as you go. Final strokes should be made with plain Skull white. Add some details with Scorched Brown, like moles etc.
There you go! As you can see, this receipt is quite basic and simple, but requires patience to pull out. You shouldn't mind using bold and strong strokes, as long as you keep your paints enough thin and running. Have fun experiencing different techniques and don't mind about smooth blends.
I hope you will find this tutorial helpful in your task painting the pale skin. Please drop a comment if you need further information regarding the steps.
The surface of the planet is ash grey, the soil corrupt and the sky above covered with thick layers of dark and tattered clouds. Two orbiting moons - one red as blood, the other pale as sick skin - float over the sky every two months, bringing havoc on the surface in form of dreadful ash storms.

Religious pilgrims took the planet as their home many thousand years ago. They harnessed the hostile environment, made it tolerable to live and build the first immigration stations (which later became places of religion and worship). After them came the proletarians and their heavy machinery. Cities grew tall, level above level was build. Soon the whole world was tightly wrapped by a web of monumental sky-reaching Hive Cities.

The Hive Cities used to be fairly safe place for man to live, even civilised you could say. But as cities grew taller, so did the greed and corruption. Noble houses used their power ruthlesly, sucking the slim wealth of the planet and spent it in arms race against each other. Soon the tightening and violence became tools of power and rulers used them without hesitation. The walls of the Hive Cities started rotting from within as the gangs of lower class started rebelling against their masters. Humongous wars between gangs and mad tyrants teared the planet's infrastructure to shreds, dragging the planet in an unending civil war.

War dried the wealth of the planet. Wealth was followed by the tithes. The suffering situation of the planet caught the attention of the Administratum and their solution for it was immediate. Imperial Guard, the Anvil of the Emperor, was sent in to solve the vexatious problem. That they did. The raging civil war was over within weeks. But what the guardians of the Emperor left behind could only be described as a total devastation; Staggering piles of corpses, burning remnants of once notable civilization and a dead world where only bandits and criminals dared to wander. Where there once was a spectacular network of monumental Hive Cities, build by the great men of the Imperium, now lied crippled ruins that represented mere shadows of their past.

In the maps of the Imperium, Ianthe IV was no more.

The moons of Ianthe IV

Ianthe IV was classified as a War World before it was wiped off from the books of the Imperium. Even though the long and bloody civil war of the Iatheans ceased long time ago, the Administratum never tried to re-populate the planet. No-one seems to know the reason for this call.

The only ones populating Ianthe IV are the survivors of the Imperial massacre. Bandits. Mercenaries. Murderers. Marauders. They battle for their everyday lives in small gangs, looting, hunting, fighting and surviving. Some of them are lucky enough to get drafted by ferocious space pirates evading the far-reaching law of the Imperium.
