An Excercise In Watercolors

I had an urgent desire to try my son's watercolors that were lying around our kitchen table. Here's the outcome...

Mutie Kul (watercolors, white acrylic paint and black ink pen)

Servo Skulls (watercolors, white acrylic paint and black ink pen)

The painting process was actually very pleasant, more than I thought. I really enjoyed the free flow that the watercolors gave me. It's been some time since the last time I tried to paint something with these instruments. I guess it was back in the high school. I remember hating them back then, maybe because I felt that I was forced to use them... Well, times change apparently.

  1. Thanks phiq! It goes without saying that I've studied Mr. Blanche's work pretty much, especially in case...

  2. Very nice...so I paint with watercolors all the time and I've never thought of using white acrylic paint with them but as I can see, I need to start! Question: did you paint the colors before using the black pen? I use the black pen first and sometimes the water colors will make the ink bleed. But I see you didn't have this problem.

  3. Hi Old Shatter Hands! I used the pen both times, before and after using watercolors. Just make sure that you're using pen that has waterproof ink.

  5. Cheers guys! I'll definitely do more watercoloring in the future and try to stay in the theme too. I've already thought about the next subject and probably will be doing it after I get back from my trip to Paris.

  7. J.B., I'm curious to learn more about the rapidograph ink, especially how it reacts with the Winsor and Newton artist inks. Does it spread when overwashed by the inks? If it does, is there any good way to seal the ink before applying colours on top of it?

While using ink pencil on top of the watercolors, I found out that the felt headed ink pencils tends to get dirty and dry by the watercolour's texture. Is there any reason to be afraid of this effect in rapidograph pencils? After all, Rotring's pencils cost like 45 to 50 euros each and it'd be shame to ruin such a treasure...

By the way, are there any good books/websites handling graphic arts which would be useful for learning more techniques? Anyone happen to know any?

  8. i wash so fast i do not scrub at the paper but glide over it - the ink tends to harden after a short while as well - i draw on top of paint as well ruining the stylus so i go thru many - the best way to learn is to do - experience - evolve what you can do and cannot do - capitalise on what works - i never read books on techniques ... experiment - be free - be elemental .......
