Red Corsair - Trophy Skulls | WIP II

Onwards with the Corsair...

The posture is now a bit more vigorous than it was in the blue tac stage. I widened the chest area a bit more from the sides and the back area and added a round of thin piece of plasticard around the Marine's waist to give the upper torso more mass. Little things like grenades and small pockets give an extra effect to make the waist even thicker.

About the trophy skulls swarming on the shoulder pad. I was doubtful wether to leave them or not. They just make the pad look, well, huge! But the more I look at them, the more I think they really make the Astartes stand out from its kins and give another nice edge to his personality. I still need to add small spikes sticking out of the skulls...

  1. Yes, do.

Makes for one heck of an imposing figure.

  2. He keeps getting better and better! I think the skull shoulderpad is fantastic, the sort of thing you imagine in 40k, but rarely actually seen well represented on a model. I feel you have done a really good job attaching them, making their placement seem natural, rather then simply tacked on. Perhaps this is going to change, but I like how much of his armour is unadorned and just pitted worn power armour. It speaks to the models character, old and well traveled across the merciless void, caring only about calculated efficiency. Keep up the good work!

I can only agree with the others! Please leave the skulls where they are, this shoulderpad looks fantastic-as does the whole model! Very cool stuff :)

  5. Cheers guys! Guess I'll keep the skulls then ;-) Just finished adding the spikes. Man, the pad now looks fierce! I also started working on some minor trim-work.

  6. Sir Godwyn just stole word right from my mouth. I tottaly agree that this skulls is something that you are trying to find on any model of chaos sm-s, khorne-one for sure. the spiked will make 'em even more realistic.

  8. Absolutely awesome, the skulls really add to it! Have you considered switching out the backpack for a loyalist one? I never entirely understood why a Chapter that fell so recently is always depicted as having the older mark. It's like they get a visit from the Traitor Legion's wardrobe department telling them they need to fit in now!

    1. Never thought of that, but in the end, the backpack will probably be covered by a huge fur mantle.

    2. Just something I thought about once, and now I can't bloody unsee it. It'd boil down to personal taste in any event, and GW themselves seem to like the old-style packs for renegade chapters. Hell, even Huron has one, and given that his incorporates the fuel pack for the Tyrant's Claw it was probably a custom job to begin with!

But the mantle sounds great, in any event. Fur works really well with the red and black colour scheme of the Corsairs too.

    3. Gaf, you have a valid point in your argument. But I'm an artsy fellow and follow my aesthetic instincts, so I'm not that much to details. I leave them to modelers ;)

    4. That's cool, and I wouldn't like to argue with the aesthetic instincts of a guy who produces stuff like you do!

Can't wait to see the next update, as of III it's looking fantastic :)

  9. Excellent stuff - you managed to remove my earlier comments regarding the chest. I'm in the minority in that I think the shoulderpad is a bit much, but this is excellent work. It'll certainly be a sight to see once it's finished!
