Re-designing The Fimir

I thought to have a short break from the Gaga project and give some creative time for our other project, the Fimir.

I've tried to start to redraw the Fimir for couple of times but with the results haven't been that great (damn I dislike drawing one-eyed heads!!). Yesterday I just grabbed my pencil and thought to give it a new try and this time actually managing to create something worth of showing...

Now if you compare this to the previous beast you can see some differences. For example, the neck is now longer and the body is much slimmer and "older". The overall feeling is now more vicious and barbaric than it was in the previous one.

I'll be giving Mikko some space to choose what direction he will be choosing for the final product. There's some nonsense text (in Finnish, sorry) here and there just to remind me and Mikko for some details and possible directions.

I'll be drawing some detailed sketches from the metallic claw that we thought that this brute could have in his other hand - which he uses to behead those pitiful human adventures he happens to encounter...

  1. when you say 'product' exactly what is the intension here ??????

  2. Maybe 'product' is a bad choice of word to describe the final outcome as this project is not going to be anything like a commercial thingy. We are not going to re-produce this thing as we're well aware of IP usage restrictions ;)

  3. I like to think that we do these out of curiosity and pure passion. We like to fill the gaps that exist in the fluff and see what would things look like if we were to design and do stuff.

The Fimir is going to be the same kind of peek to the history as was our Rogan Ryaard, Chaos Dwarf of Tzeentch, project.

  5. Very nice indeed! I like those "warped" proportions!
I think we have have created our own Design-Philosophy where we seek the past to find our inspiration (Old miniatures, old artworks)..after that, we add our own input to create something new out of it. Something that looks fresh but has that little Retro-Feel in it=)

Like izeColt explained earlier, we just love the old stuff too much!

  6. i think i understand why so many seem to revere things that had such a big impact on their younger selves - theres so many - not so shared bi me tho as i just love new shiney things - cant get enthusiastic about britains, timpo or airfix .....

  7. Yeah! Old GW stuff had big impact on me when i was a kid!
izeColt likes to paint those old miniatures too (he has quite impressive collections!)

To me, its just that i like those things but i would never want to copy them. I want to use the vibes i get from those things to create new ones!

  8. I like it a lot.

The sketch has a Froud-esque look to me, almost looks like it'd be at home in Labyrinth.

The foreign language(to me) notes could be an ancient, undiscovered script!

  9. I like Jim Henson's work really much, espacially Labyrinth has a special place in my memories! To tell you the truth, I scrabbled some inspiration from The Dark Crystal while drawing this one, particularly from the crooky Skeksis'.

  10. I think the fimir are heavily influenced by films like the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. There'a actually an old White Dwarf back cover with dwarves greeting a group of Dark Crystal mystics. This could be part of the reason I goddam love the fimir.

I wouldn't worry too much about IP, look at Bloodmoon miniatures bog raiders.

  11. Good points about relations, Mr Saturday, and welcome onboard! Visited your blog and looks like you've also been working on with the trails of this classic monster!

I'd really like to see what would the fimir look like if Games Workshop would use their today's technology and innovation to create the thing, in plastic multipart. That'd be something!
